Question by Jana N.: What would cause a computer to make noises like dialing a fax machine?
Even with the computer turned off, it is still making this sound. About every four minutes it makes four tones like it is dialing a fax. I do not use a fax with this computer. Please help!!
I have Road Runner through Time Warner Cable. I am using Firefox 3.5.3.
The computer was the only thing besides my tv that would have made any noise. The beeping was definitely coming from the computer. There was no fan noise and no HD activity.

Do you have a dial-up ISP?

You have what is called a DIALER. It is a Trojan that tries to call out to 1900 numbers to charge to your phone. If you arn’t using your modem just disable it in the hardware.. Or use SPYBOT to remove the trojan. they tend to have PORN based content.
To disable a Dialup Modem
Goto Control Panel
System
Hardware/device manager
Scroll down to Modem/network devices
Highlight your MODEM and right click.
Select disable.
Done.
Last suggestion, are you sure it is the Computer making the noises? I don’t think your dumb, just sometimes people can be fooled by other things around them making noises.
