What does it mean when a diagnostic computer cannot read my car’s computer when hooked up?
Question by Rich: What does it mean when a diagnostic computer cannot read my car’s computer when hooked up?
My friend who is a great mechanic tried to read the codes for my car but his device could not read the car’ computer.
I was curious of any old codes on the computer. My engine light is not on but it does test itself and turn off when I start the car. Should I even be worried to fix the connection problem or wait until my check engine light comes on?

If the light isn’t on why do you care? All check engine lights come on when you start a car for the most part, and then go off. Maybe your friends unit isn’t compatible with your system – the module isn’t right, OBD1 OBD2??
BUT WHO CARES IF THE LIGHT ISN”T ON?!?!
Don’t be a car hypochondriac – drive it, maintain it, fix it when it’s broken

Maybe he put the wrong the key for the computer and it is not reading the right thing, or maybe he doesn’t have an upgrated computer diagnostic system. Snap On is a good computer diagnostic system. The computer diagnostice system comes with different keys maybe he didn’t use the right key for your car.

So then I guess he isn’t that good of a mechanic if you’re asking us instead of him.
