Question by cookie: How make a desktop computer work faster?
Is it possible to buy a computer with a Pentium 4 processor that is as fast as a Core 2 duo?
I wont have games or any media on it
Do I need a lot of memory for it to work faster?
Or should I just buy a more expensive computer with a better processor?

You might need more RAM. 1GB is the least amount of RAM you need; 2GB would be nice. Your hard drive might be small, too. 200GB is perfect for anything you need.

Microsoft really is a helpful company
The link below is four key methods to use Windows applications to help speed up your system, for free.

However a more realistic approach is to upgrade your Ram, known as memory. This is relatively inexpensive as the ram cards are cheap and easy to self install.

The average system run of 1 Gb – 2 GB of Ram.

1 or 2 GBs would make it faster but your better off with a new PC with a core 2 duo.
    Hope this helps.

It is not possible to make a P4 run as fast as a Core 2 Duo. The Core 2′s are a totally different architecture.

look for a processor with a 3GHz or better (2.8 is ok too) but the older 1.nn or whatever is way to slow for internet because most web pages use shockwave, java, Animaton etc… that were not around in the jurassic age… 3-4 years ago

    - No

I wont have games or any media on it

    - Games and media (music/movies) don’t slow a computer down unless your hard drive is full. If you are not running games or watch downloaded movies, then 80 GB is enough. More is always better, and if the difference between 200GB and 80GB is small (such as $ 20-30) then splurge.

Do I need a lot of memory for it to work faster?

On XP 1 GB is enough for most users. Vista 2GB is preferred.

Or should I just buy a more expensive computer with a better processor?

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you are going to surf the net, read email and type up letters then a P4 will work. If you are going to do video editing and games then Core 2 Duo is what you want. My only recommendation is to stay away for Celerons.

No,Intel core Duo processors is the same as having two Pentium 4 processors in one. Thus the name dual core or duo.Pentium 4 and Pentium D CPUs have run at relatively high clock speeds but delivered relatively low performance compared to their competition from AMD. They’ve also drawn a tremendous amount of power, which they’ve generously expended as heat. Intel Core 2 Duo performs better and faster but to a lot of folks surprise is has its share of hangups. Most core duo’s have front side bus speed of 1066 MHz and if your really into computers and know how they work,,that’s not a great speed.
