Q&A: How can the main computer not allow its users to get online when my own laptop lets me to get on the internet?
Question by Joy Gillingham: How can the main computer not allow its users to get online when my own laptop lets me to get on the internet?
The main computer was just fine, if a little slow yesterday, when today it wouldn’t let us get on the internet at all, even after we restarted the tower. Is there anything we can do to fix this problem besides calling a computer expert?

I will try to help you but it is hard to know where to start because your description of the problem is somewhat vague. There are many reasons why the computer might not go online. Let’s try some of the obvious:
Make certain that malware is not stopping you. Run a full Spyware scan and Antivirus scan. Once you are certain that is not( or probably not)the cause. Troubleshoot starting with the Hardware then moving to a Settings or Configuration problem.
#1. TRY THIS FIRST: Check that your Computer is setup to connect to the Internet. Click On the Networking Icon. It may be that it has been accidentally turned off(disabled). If this is the case simply Checking Connect/Enable(however it is worded)will solve the problem.
#2. Make certain the Wireless card is operating and properly seated in the computer. Look on the back of the computer and you should see a LED and probably a tiny plastic antenna. Try moving the antenna to a different position.
If the LED is not lit. Your wireless card may have gone bad. It is also possible that somehow the card has was “jostled” loose but this would require someone going inside the card then pulling on the card–removing then reseating it back into its slot. The problem is-going inside the case and bumping something could kill the computer by ESD(Electo Static Discharge). I recommend you not attempt that this technique. If no one has bumped or dropped the computer you pretty much this out as a problem.
#3. If your wireless hardware is a USB Modem Adapter also called a Dongle. Make certain it is turned on(if applicable). Plug into a different USB to rule out a defective USB port. Test the dongle on the laptop to verify that that hardware is not failing.
#4. Plug a Ethernet Cable directly into the Main Computer. If no connection is made then you likely have a problem more serious than simply not connecting to the Internet but is showing up as this problem. We can rule out the router being the problem since the laptop is connecting. And you will need to call in the “Computer Expert” because someone with computer experience needs to “see” what is going on.
Good Luck..
