This review is based on the downloadable version available for some time. I played it on a friends’ computer to come up with my review.

The Hoyle Card Game series used to be something I looked forward to buying every year. That was before Encore Software bought the rights to the game several years ago. Since then, they have done nothing but ruin a wonderful game with their so-called “improvements”. The 2011 edition looks virtually the same as the 2010 & 2009 editions. The cards are still woefully small, standard features such as a simple reset button in Canfield are missing, and the cutesy graphics that only succeed in hindering gameplay are still there.

To make matters worse, Encore has discontinued Hoyle Royal Suite, the online component available in the 2009 editions of Hoyle Card and Casino.

It seems obvious to me that Encore is putting less & less time and effort into the Hoyle line, while still proclaiming every new edition to be “new and improved” in order to make a few extra bucks. And don’t bother going to the official Hoyle forums. Any negative comments are removed immediately by the moderator “Brandy redux” in a classless and adolescent attempt to hide the flaws in the Hoyle titles.

Hoyle Card Games 2008 was the last decent edition of this line. It was put out before Encore started messing up the series. It works fine on Windows 7. Look on eBay for a good price. This is truly a dark time for card playing software on the PC level. Even Reel Deal Card Games 2011 gets poor ratings.

For me, though, I will definitely not purchase any Encore Software title.

    Pure garbage!

Was so looking forward to the new Hoyle card games for Windows 7. Instead have been very, very disappointed with it. All the solitaire games I have played display postage stamp size cards on a huge table that takes up most of the screen instead of using all that space for the card display. Canasta, a favorite, has larger cards but they run together — you can’t tell where one stops and the other begins. The discard trays are again postage stamp size — so small you can’t readily tell how many cards are in the trays. Movement is not smooth. Also, I was hoping there would be new characters after all these years; but NO!!! Agree with other reviewers that your money would be better spent purchasing older versions not made by Encore.

This is virtually identical to the prior year’s version, so expect the same brutal experience. Do Not Buy! If you’re curious about the issues with these recent additions, read the 2010 reviews. There’s no point in repeating them in this review.

The 2011 version of Hoyle Card Games by Encore does not live up to the 2005 version. The only reason I bought it was I couldn’t load the ’05 version on my lap top which uses Windows 7. In team games the players don’t talk and the animation is slow. I don’t care for the layout in the card games; the tables are too big and the cards too small. I would return it if I could.
