Question by Ash: How would you build a computer from absolutely nothing?
I don’t mean using parts bought from a shop or anything, I mean how could you build a computer using nothing but metal and some tools? Would it be possible to make even a tiny computer with a small amount of memory?

Not unless you use the loosest form of the word “computer”.

An abacus can be defined as a computer and I could make an abacus like that.

Well, the computer that you would make would be HUGE- think ENIAC. You would also need semiconductors, diodes, etc. It would probably not be worth the effort and take thousands of dollars, if not more.

Go to the beach and get some sand. Purify it into silicon (you’ll need a furnace of some kind – I design computers from the basic components [capacitors, resistors, etc.] up, and I don’t even know the processes used), then dope some to be electron donor and some to be electron acceptor. (Are you starting to get the idea? It’s like a cave man making a car from basic materials he could find 50,000 years ago.)
Would it be possible? Probably. Would it cost more than a fleet of airliners? Also probably. Once you’ve built a silicon foundry that can produce memory chips, the difference between 1MB and 64GB is about the same as the difference in ocean level if you dropped 1 drop of water into it. A few billion dollars, and a few billion dollars and 20 cents, are about the same.
