How do I stop my computer from periodically freezing?
Posted by: kk : Category: Computer Question Answers
If i leave my computer on for too long (sometimes in under an hour) it completely freezes up and i cannot even move the mouse or use the keyboard. This happens every time i leave the computer alone for a while. Many times it will happen when i am in the middle of something, forcing me to turn it off and back on.
The computer itself has recently been formatted and windows re-installed. I did not have this problem prior to the format.

Go to the search box in the start menu and type in “clean up hard drive” and do it!
Then when that’s done, go back to the search box and type in “disk defragmenter” and do it! That one takes a while though..
Should help

You did not indicate about the operating system. However, check automatic maintenance options, it might happen that some features are enabled like shutdown or sleeping mode, try to locate them and disable…

are you overclocking anything? if so stop! if not then shut down your computer and if it is a desktop computer then take out all the ram and and boot it up to the bios and listen to see if it beeps, if it does than shut it down again and install just one ram module back in and boot your computer up and run it for a while and see if it still does it, if it does shut it down and switch out the ram module for a different one and try it again? it sounds like you might have a ram module going bad on you. if that does not work then go into your bios and see how hot your cup is running? if it is more than 55 to 60 degrees you have a cooling problem somewhere. i see you said it didn’t do it before the format so check your drivers too and make sure they are updated to the newest ones. good luck

You may need to reformat again. Re install windows on your computer.

Despite what some of the answers state, this is most likely NOT a software issue. It is actually more than likely a hardware issue. This issue typically comes as a result of three things. Either your computer is dusty and dirty, and something is getting overheated, or something is slightly unplugged.
Your computer may need to be cleaned, and I mean the inside of it, with a blower to free it of dust. Make sure to decharge yourself by touching something metal before going in.
You also need to make sure that everything is plugged in correctly. Sometimes, things that are loose, but not unplugged, will unplug for a fraction of a second, and cause the freezing you suggest. Make sure everything is plugged in correctly, that includes inside the computer as much as outside.
You can also try to make sure there is plenty of ventilation around the item. Overheating is one of the many things that can cause a system to freeze. Even if a system did not do it before, it is possible that the system is not running as well as it once had, and as a result is overheating easily. So don’t assume that because your computer worked in cramped conditions for three years that it will always work in those conditions. Like everything else, they get old, and maybe their fans don’t run as efficiently as they once had, maybe gunk from smoking has gunked up some of the components. For whatever reason, it IS over heating now, and whatever can prevent that from happening will help you.
If that does work, then it is possible that some hardware in your computer is broken. Pull out one component at a time, running at the minimum of components, (ie, pull out anything that does not have to be there, such as second hard drives, graphics cards, and anything extra PCI or PCI express. if it does not freeze, put one component back in at a time until you find the offending target.
