How do I run a custom computer configuration to stop programs from starting up and slowing down my computer?
Question by Idania: How do I run a custom computer configuration to stop programs from starting up and slowing down my computer?
When starting up my laptop Yahoo and MSN Messenger open up slowing down my computer. Staples suggested a custom computer configuration. What is that? Can I do it myself? If so, what do I do?

Go to the start menu and click run. Type msconfig. When the “System Configuration” window pops up, click the “Startup” tab and deselect the startup items for Yahoo and MSN, then click OK. Alternatively, there may be a setting directly in Yahoo and MSN to prevent that – search for it a bit in the options menu.

There are lots of cool utilities you can download for free from the Internet – you just have to be careful which ones you choose, in order to avoid malware that is disguised as a useful utility. Ccleaner is a safe, useful, and free utility that you can get. Download, install, then run CCleaner. Just use Yahoo or Google to find it on the Internet. This free program, among other things, offers you control over which programs will load at start up. Additionally, it will clean up and otherwise fix your registry, which will speed up your computer even more.
Finally, in addition to that which I have mentioned above, defragmenting your hard drive can sometimes speed up your computer, depending on how fragmented it is.

I will tell you what I know. Yes, be careful of viruses posing as useful software. Recently, before I had startup manager I actually contracted one of those (I’m guessing how I receieved a virus is I was on a malicious site and I thought what popped up was a update, or I thought I was downloading a harmless plugin ). Startup manager is a free software I installed originally to take the virus out of startup hoping that it might help. Startup Manager’s actually easy. If you choose to try it make sure to check “create a desktop icon”. I didn’t and that resulted in a real inconveniance.
Quite a while ago to increase PC performance I downloaded System Mechanic (regular version) after it was recommended by my uncle (a computer geek). System Mechanic holds several tools to do useful things. http://www.iolo.com/downloads.aspx If you choose to download first look up coupon codes on the internet, so you can get a good deal.
