Question by Tiffany: How do I retrieve files from one computer via another using just one monitor?
I have computer, A, and computer, B and just one monitor. I tried connecting A to the monitor, but the monitor goes into standby mode. Is there any way to access files on computer A using Computer B via some connection?
Computer B works fine with the monitor.
Both run windows XP.

Remove the drive from A and slave it to B. You have to set the jumpers to ‘Slave’. There’s usually a diagram on the drive.☺

If you have them on a network, use remote desktop, enable it on the system control panel. Or setup a network share on the source PC and mount it or browse to it from the destination PC. Lots of ways to do this but none are that simple unless you know Windows networking.

That’s a tough one simply because you can’t access computer A right now. In case you were curious, the problem most likely is that your graphics card is broken, and you can easily fix the issue by getting a new graphics card from $ 30-$ 50.

But if you don’t want to fix computer A, the only real way to do it is rip out your hard drive from computer A. Then plug it into computer B. There are many ways to do it. You can get a hard drive enclosure and/or a USB converter anywhere from $ 10-$ 30 and connect it via esata or USB (whichever you have), then transferring the files you want over in computer B’s HDD via click and drag.

You can also plug the hard drive A directly into computer B, either as a slave or cable select, doesn’t really matter, just make sure it boots to Hard drive B in your bios. Then you can transfer files over that way. You also might want to use a disk such as Hiren’s Boot Disk, then load up Mini windows. That way neither hard drive is being read and transferring can be done a little more smoothly. Not necessary, but if your computer decides to get whinny and decide you need to reformat HD A, well, that is your solution.
