How do I make a computer fan run without installing it onto a computer?

Is it possible for me to supply power to a computer fan and make it spin, without installing it onto a computer?

find the specs on the fan match to a battery hook up and wa la in runs

Yep. You just need a 12v DC power supply.

I tried that with a few fans (4) i installed in a tv wall unit i build and it wouldn’t work…
The only way i was able to make it work was to plug the main motherboard power cable (the 24pins)
to a power supply tester (pretty cheap), then it works. Seems that the main motherboard power cable
has to be plugged somewhere to make it work..
