How can hackers break into a computer that has no internet connection?
Posted by: kk : Category: Computer Question Answers
I hear alot about hackers breaking into computers in banks, government facilities, and other secure places to steal information or secrets.
Obviously, a computer with confidential or top secret info on it would not be connected to the internet. So how would a hacker gain access to it? It would have to be an employee or janitor or someone with physical access to the office, wouldn’t it? How could a thief remotely access a computer if there is no connection from it to the internet or to other computers?
Can anyone clarify this for me?

If the machine was on a LAN without any Internet access, you could “hack” into it from any other client on that LAN.
If it was not networked at all, then yes, I suppose it would have to be someone who is trusted highly enough to be allowed to enter the room where the machine is physically located.

Lol, obviously is wrong. Do you understand how interconnected banks are? How do you think they wire money? How do you view your statements online each month? They all have every single office connected to each other, and obviously its over internet. So even while some computers may not be hooked directly to the internet, they connect to other computers in the building which do connect to the internet. So no, “Top secret” computers are not kept off the internet. Its a necessity for it to be connected.

You have the key there. These computers do have connections with the outside. If the connections are private lines between the company’s several computers its very hard but possible to break in. Even private networks like the government uses are still networks that can be connected to with the right tools.
