While videos were being released for this game, I’m sure others like myself were excited to see the Harry Potter game getting a reboot of sorts with intense battles, improved graphics, and more exploring. Sadly, that’s not what turned out.

I’m not sure where to start, but I’m going to list what I can to prevent any big Harry Potter fan from grabbing the worst Harry Potter game to come out thus far.

Graphics: the graphics are probably some of the best so far, but can be ruined by a filter that gets put over the screen during darker parts of the game. Now the offset of the great graphics, are the fact that it seems the developers felt they put enough work in to a few environments to not make anymore and just recycle them. Which takes me to the next part:

Environments: While many of the environments look nice, and have interesting paths to run around, you’re often made to go through the same environments over and over again doing very similar missions. You’ll soon get sick of the enviornments being forced to go through them over and over.

Battle Mechanics: So the big appeal of the trailers were the intense battles. It’s not as exciting as it looks. Although you unlock several spells throughout the game, you’ll fair just fine using the same one the entire time, making the appeal of other spells minimal. One of the best spells is the Cunfringo(sp?) spell which allows you to shoot an explosion of sorts.
Dodging Mechanis: During battles you are able to hide behind objects which is sort of useful. It can be hard to unhide yourself, lock on to your target, fire your spell, and hide yourself again without getting hit with many spells. Even if this does workout succesfully, the snatchers and death appears can apparate (Appear) anywhere, even right behind you, so hiding doesn’t do much good.

The missions: While you’ll have fun with the main plotline, it’s broken up frequently with a set of three un-related to the quest missions you must complete before you can continue the plotline. This feels awkward, out of place, and ruins the story line. Now this wouldn’t be a terrible thing, but each 3-mission section consist of the same 3 objections in different scenary. The 3 are: 1) Hide under your invisibility cloak while sneaky right next to death eaters and snatchers to free muggle-borns. This is often frustrating as bumping in to anyone results in your cloak coming off and being fired at, instead of a simple “What hit me?” And if you fail, even after releasing 5 of 6 muggle-borns, you’ll have to start from the begining again. Tedius, and boring. 2) Releasing muggle-borns while being confronted with enemies to defeat. This is really the only fun of the 3 missions. 3) Survive several waves of bad guys until they stop appearing and that mission is over.

All 3 pretty basic, and pretty boring and tedius.

My rating of 2 stars is only as a Harry Potter fan, otherwise I would give it 1/5 stars. Although the 5th and 6th video games were less than amazing, they are better than this game in my opinion.

I was very excited to play this game after loving the movie so much, but I was very disappointed. I have a fairly decent and speedy computer, and the game slows it down so much that I had to try and time my mouse movements with the 5 second delay. The game starts out with death eaters chasing you and your mission is simply “defeat all death eaters” there are minimal instructions on HOW to do this, and it is difficult to aim as they are constantly moving around. It also just goes through this sequence about 5 times of you defeating death eaters in the air. The game is pretty much the same for the rest. You must defeat death eaters or at least survive an attack. This is accompanied by intermittent stealth sequences where you where Harry’s invisibility cloak and must sneak past people who are apt to apparate right in front of you, causing you to walk into them. Also, there are occasional random missions that have absolutely nothing to do with the story at all. The one good thing it has going for it is the graphics, which are better than the previous games, but still pretty bad. Overall, this game is one of the worst games I have ever played, and definitely the worst Harry Potter game. I sincerely hope that EA does a better job on part 2.

Worst Harry Potter PC Game of the Series, November 27, 2010

I am an avid fan of Harry Potter, I love the series and the movies. That being said I am sorely disappointed in the Deathly Hallows PC game. My sister and I both agree this is the worst game of the series and we regret wasting our money on it.

I found the storyline of the game to be very tiring and tedious. It follows the general premise of the movie (not the book) and yet Harry is made to do all of these ridiculously boring challenges, like detoxifying Sirius’ house; walking up to people in his invisibility cloak (if you bump into someone you have to start over again); stunning a relentless stream of Death Eaters and walking, endlessly walking. I thought the first person (shooter) perspective of the game would be interesting but its just too slow for the quickness of the battles. It was too difficult to control both the wand and the camera at the same time, especially since the control options are so limited. If there was an option to change the camera angle (and if there is please someone tell me how!) it may have helped, but as it is I find the game dizzying in its utter inability to work properly.

The aim of Harry’s wand is pathetic, I could barely hit anything and everything seems to depend on accuracy. I think the first person perspective also taints the beauty of the graphics (which are excellent in places) because you are too busy trying to get Harry to stop getting stuck in corners or behind rocks to notice the scenery.

I admit that I have not finished the game, I will labor through and get my money’s worth but really EA Games, really? This was the best you could do?

I suggest the Harry Potter Lego Game years 1-4 if you have not already tried the other EA versions of Harry years 1-6. I recommend years 1,2,3,5.

This game cd is well worth buying. I love playing cards and there are many choices of games available. I also liked the interaction features. I choose what “characters” to play with and even create my own persona. It’s almost like playing cards with real people! I consider this to be the best card game cd on the market. Additionally, once it is on your computer, you can play without inserting the cd. This is great!

This software is great. Microsoft only gives you one version of Solitaire. I now have 50 versions, plus many other card games. I am afraid I have become addicted to playing the games. Hours pass without notice. I definitely recommend this product.

The Deck Is Stacked, June 21, 2008

This is a neat tool to hone your skills but does not duplicate playing conditions.

Luck and skill are main ingredients to any card game. The problem the software makers had was that, unlike in chess software, the computer card player in this software is not smarter than the average human player. So, the software creates an “equal” playing field by stacking the deck in favor of the computer opponent(s). In the case of partner playing, the human partner’s computer partner plays a notch or two under the skill level of the computer opponents. So, the software “levels the playing field” by giving the opposing team better cards and a less skillful computer opponent.

I used this software primarily to play Canasta. What I found was that at the highest opening meld level (120 points), the computer team had little or no problem coming up with the opening meld 50% or more of the time. In contrast, the human-computer team came in easily about 10% of the time. So, based on the luck of the initial deal the computer team had a 5 to 1 advantage.

Also, as the game progresses the human led team gets far fewer wildcards (about 20% vs. 80% for the computer team). At the end of each hand the computer team rarely had wildcards left in their hand, the human players’ computer partner often did and thus did not play as “smart” as the other computer players.

    The bottom line is:

    1. This is a fine tool to hone your thinking/strategy skills because you play with the deck stacked against you (especially as the hands proceed toward the end of each game).

    2. It does not duplicate real playing conditions. If you would get frustrated by the luck of the draw being mostly against you and having a computer partner who plays dumber than the computer opponents, you might want to think twice about getting this software.
