I installed Pest Patrol last year and it was fairly easy to use but I found the interface to be lame and the instructions confusing at times. When my subscription expired I tried CounterSpy which detected nearly 200 Spyware/Adware infections immediately after a Pest Patrol scan. CounterSpy also removed several hijacking problems that Pest Patrol did not. The CounterSpy interface is easy to use and understand is way ahead of Pest Patrol in this regard. I also use the free version of Ad-Aware and my PC has been running great. I run XP and have had no problems although I have heard of problems with other OS’s.

This was once the best Antispyware program by far, but now that Computer Associates bought it and produced version 5. I must now try to find a new program to use. The user interface is now absolutly terrible and licensing checks every time the program is started is totaly annoying. This should now be put in the dumper along with CA’s EZtrust products. Stay Away!!

I have installed this on multiple occasions, many times on PC’s which were virtual “typhoid Marys” with many instances of spyware. Some PCs had “Spybot” or “Adaware” or some other such product which was having no positive effect in either identifying, let alone eliminating, the threats.

After installing and running this, the program provides very specific instructions and explanation of what’s going on. You can set up automatic updates for complete protection going forward. Great software, great price.

Just purchased 2 of these at my local store, one for my daughter, one for myself..loaded it on my computer with three different users and will only work when the main user is logged on not the other two..ran the program says didn’t find anything…ran free downloads from other antispyware sites and they came up with more then 20 bad objects…my daughter runs her pest patrol and comes up with nothing found..did the same thing with free scans and over 50 on hers..and she stills gets tons of pop-ups with “pest-patrol) on her system..contacted customer service (as bad as dell..all india people no americans)..emailed customer service still waiting for a reply after two weeks… WARNING DO NOT PURCHASE THIS… A BIG WASTE OF MONEY..those crooks at CA should go to jail for having such a BAD product on the market and ripping people off…The free stuff on the internet is better then this crap..take my word for it..you will be sorry if you buy this!!!

No single anti spyware program will find everything. But the sure bets are: Pay programs: Etrust’s Pest Patrol, Webroots Spy Sweeper.

Free Programs: Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Microsoft’s Beta Anti-Spyware… I have all of these.

E-trust seems to keep more up to date than most. It is SUPER FAST at scanning ( the quick scan ), and detects a lot that none of the others will.

It’s had great reviews by Maximum PC. I reccommend it in conjunction with the others listed above, as just 1 is too few.

Cons: It may be a little (slighty) non=user friendly. It just takes looking at all the options in (all the buttons) to be sure you’re scanning what you want. The quick scan will scan target areas, but its good to do a full system scan when you first purchase it. You’ll need to select your hard drive (s) to do this and other locations… but you should be fine in finding how to do this.
