I had a Dell and it did it’s job. I just need a new computer b/c my old one literally fried. But I am not buying Dell again due to the laptop I have with them has been horrible. So what is a good desktop computer that isn’t too terribly expensive that works well for a mix of doing college work and playing games? Please give me suggestions thanks.
Over 2k is terribly expensive for me.

I am trying to connect my computer to my hd tv through an hdmi cable. When I connect the computer to the tv the video appears in the tv but the audio still comes from the computer. I know that the hdmi cable transmits both video and audio because it does that when I connect it to my blu ray player. Does anybody know how I can connect my computer so that both the video and audio come from the tv. Also my computer runs on Windows Vista.

You need to go into your control panel and change the sound output to digital.

Hey everyone… I’d reeeeally like some advice. I’m looking to buy a new computer capable of gaming & running Windows Vista… so I need it to be pretty high performance. Of course, I’d like to stay on a budget as much as possible… so searching around I found a computer with the option to make payments in installments. It seems to have pretty much everything I need, all I’ll need to add are video and sound cards.

My main question is just what the subject line says… how important is the manufacturer of the computer? This one is made by a company called Mirus who I can’t seem to find much information on. A few sites have suggested that users “stay away” from Mirus, but I’m not sure if that’s only because of customer support issues, or if it has something to do with the computer actually breaking down or something drastic like that.

So, if the computer has all the right hardware in it, does it really matter who put it together?

The question isn’t “who puts it together” but “what parts go into it”? And the bottom line here is it depends on you. You might lean more towards a cheap unsupported computer if: You’re good with computers and don’t need much customer support; you don’t mind troubleshooting hardware and software problems on your own (another computer in the house can be extremely helpful here); and if you don’t plan on doing anything unusual with your software and hardware (installing old programs, hacking your hardware…). Or you have tech-savvy friends who, unlike me, will smile and freely offer to help you solve your problems for the next 7 hours.

With computer hardware as well as in life in general, you often get what you pay for. This isn’t to say that you’ll certainly have a problem with cheap laptops; but if you do you may end up pulling out your hair attempting to fix it. Of course many people with top of the line stuff also go bald attempting to repair computer probelsm too.

Part of the issue here is that cheap computers with all the “right” hardware are able to offer you good prices because of cheaply made hardware. You might be attracted to that 12x dual-layer DVD burner 48xwhatever, but there’s a difference among hardware pieces. Sometimes one manufacturer will make quality name brand gear in one factory and junk in another, and one way to tell them apart is often price. Another way is when the piece of junk falls apart after 6 months, or doesn’t seem to work with software or hardware that no one else has problems with.

If you’re not a computer guru then customer support is very important. Even I have to resort to it occasionally and I’ve built and troubleshooted (shot?) computers. Recently I had to call Netgear and I had trouble understanding the reps accent and all he did was ask me to repeat my story a few times (I’m sure he was a very nice and hardworking person however).

Again the question isn’t who put it together but what parts (and I mean nitty-gritty parts, the motherboard (maker and model!), the memory, the DVD drive etc) are in it.

You’re absolutely right to be checking on line reviews. As with all info online (self-referencing here), take it with a grain of salt. However, consistently junky references about a manufacturer or computer can save your from a lot of future frustration.

I’m thinking every three years, maybe four years if new computer games don’t move to another standard that is not supported by older computers (example: when many new games updated their pixel shader requirements and weren’t backwards compatible).

Perhaps by then laptops will be just as powerful as desktops for gaming if not more?

nowadays graphics arent improving as fast as they used to. buy a great computer now (with directx11 graphics card) and it should last a good 4 years unless 3d or something comes out

I’m trying to install a Nancy Drew computer game on to my disk drive E instead of having it on drive C. I don’t have enough space on drive C to install it. How would I do this? During the installation it should ask where you want to install it. And usually it would have something like the following:
C:\program files\nancy drew\

Or something like that ^^^

So all you need to do is change that to E:\
Then it should install onto the E: Drive

If it doesn’t let you choose where to install it then maybe you should just free up some space on the C: Drive.

Connecting both computers to an ethernet DSL router gives me a local area network (LAN). I want to transfer files from the old Windows 98 SE computer to the new Windows XP computer. My computer is fast, then my g/f will play Sims 2 on the computer. When she is done and she closes everything I have to restart the computer because it will go very slow if I dont.

It means that you have a large size pf(page file). It’s a space on your hard disk that Windows uses as RAM. When you play game and it takes up lots of RAM, it transfers other things to HDD. When you exit the game and ram is freed, it again loads all the things back to ram from hdd. It’s slow because transfer speed of hdd is much lower than ram.
If you have a good amount of ram like 1GB or GB or higher, try decreasing the value of your virtual memory to a lower amount say 512MB. To know how to change it read this

I need to connect my computer to my 42″ plasma television through an LG combination dvd receiver that is connected to the TV.

The receiver has an orange coax in, optical in, s video out, and a set of component outs.

The TV has an audio pc in, and 15 pin pc input, an optical and digital audio out.

My computer has digital audio in and out, a set of component in and s-video, and a tv (cable style) in and out.

Connect PC to TV via VGA (it is not listed, but ALL PCs have VGA)
Connect PC dig audio out to Receiver dig. audio in.

If you have your installation disk then its just a case of popping in the cd/dvd drive then making sure you boot from cd/dvd.
As for free software:
AntiVirus = http://free.avg.com
Spyware = http://www.safer-networking.org
Firewall = http://www.zonealarm.com

Remember to find out what hardware you have as its likely you will need to install drivers unless you have all the drivers on a disk.
