Print Top-Quality Documents Fast
The MFC-5490CN prints both documents and photos at up to 6000 x 1200 dpi and can reach speeds of up to 35 ppm black and 28 ppm color. The printer supports paper sizes up to legal size (8 x 14 inches), and has a large 150-sheet input tray so you won’t have to constantly add more paper. It uses separate ink cartridges for each color so you only replace the color that runs out.

You can also print photos directly from the printer without using your PC thanks to the PhotoCapture Center. You can import photos directly using either the built-in media card slot or by connecting a PictBridge-enabled camera or USB flash memory. The media card slot supports compact flash, memory stick, memory stick pro, SD, SDHC, xD, and xD TypeM/TypeH.

Copy and Scan with the Same Device
The MFC-5490CN lets you copy and scan as well as print from the same device. The stand-alone copier doesn’t require a PC and can make both black-and-white and color copies at a speed of 23 cpm black and 20 cpm color. It can scale copies from 25 to 400 percent of the original, and it supports sorting and 2-in-1/4-in-1 copying. A 50-sheet automatic document feeder lets you scan and copy pages unattended.

The flatbed scanner has a maximum optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi at 36-bit color depth for high-quality scans. It works with both Mac OS and Windows, and it includes Scansoft PaperPort v11 SE with OCR software for Windows and Presto! PageManager software for Mac.

Send and Receive Black-and-White and Color Faxes
A high-speed Super G3 33.6K bps fax modem lets you send and receive black-and-white and color faxes at up to three seconds per page. The 50-sheet automatic document feeder lets you send faxes unattended. In addition to functioning as a stand-alone fax, it also works as a PC fax.

I got it [...] and I couldn’t be happier. I am able to work from home becasue I have this unit. I love the feature in which I can scan to email as PFDs.

I have been using the printer for 6 months and need to replace the black, so I am happy with the ink usage. The paper handling may not be perfect but it is way better than the last HP I had and has never jammed on me. I haven’t tried printing photos because that is not why I bought it. I have a Canon I use for that.

The poster that indicated he had to enable file and printer sharing is not correct. I just hook it to my router and any computer in my home I install the driver on can use the printer.

For the price it is a great all in one. It prints very quickly, receives and sends faxes in record time. I am very happy. Buy it.

We have been using this printer in a small office for about 6 months, and we find it unacceptable.

The fax scans all pages before sending, and will not allow you to interrupt a fax once it has started (even the power button is disabled). Very frustrating if you are having connection issues.

If you press copy and start it does nothing because it wakes up in Fax mode.

When the ink is low it sends constant popups to every computer on the network.

It will NOT PRINT if it thinks the ink is low – this is perhaps the most frustrating issue with this printer.

It chooses to clean itself BEFORE printing your job, and self cleaning can take up to 5 minutes.

I find the ink usage higher than the HP it replaced.

This printer does not have Win98 or Linux drivers, and does not include an HTTP print server.

This machine arrived very promptly. The machine does everything as advertised, and was relatively easy to set up and use for the first time. The only “problem” I had was the USB cable connection between the machine and my computer (which was not included) was not a standard USB connection on one end, and the instructions did not indicate that, either. I found out (at an office supply store) that there was another type of USB cable and was able to purchase the correct cable there).

Have always used HP printers until now. Liked the features listed for this printer and have heard some good reports on ink usage so I thought I’d give it a try. Glad I did. It does everything it’s supposed to do and does it fast. Well satisfied.

If you just want to print on letter size paper and never do anything else, this is probably going to be just fine for you. My dissatisfaction comes from the clunky and downright unfriendly hardware and terrible paper handling.

To connect the device to your computer/network via USB or Ethernet, you have to lift up the entire scanner glass assembly to get to this crazy in-the-guts-of-the-machine port area to snake your cables through and plug in. I never though that external USB and RJ45 connectors were a feature, but after using this thing I’ll never take them for granted again.

After following all the instructions, I was never able to get the MFC-5490CN to connect to my network. I was forced to use USB and printer sharing to allow other machines to print to the Brother.

Now for the paper handling gripe. I “upgraded” to this machine from a cheap little Canon printer. The little $50 printer from Canon managed to handle CD/DVD paper sleeves with round plastic windows just fine. I print on the back of the sleeves in color and with no problem with the old Canon. This Brother machine, though, couldn’t handle them at all. It would slip, snag, snarl and jam every 10th sleeve. The output was difficult to access (reach your hand into the cavity of the machine to get it) and when it did finally print a sleeve, the rollers obviously slipped, because the text was fuzzy. It was as if the sleeves were sliding around under the ink nozzles. Every sleeve that made it through was also severely wrinkled.

Since printing on CD/DVD paper sleeves is a big part of my printer usage, I had no choice but to get rid of this thing.

Also, beware that this machine ships with “starter” ink cartridges. This means that they have much less ink than the cartridges you’ll end up buying. This seems like a very anti-consumer move on the part of Brother.

You can be sure that this is the last device from Brother that I purchase.
