1. The AI Recovery Burner program to make a mirror copy of Windows 7 Pro does not work correctly. Asus knows about the problem – they just haven’t told anyone. After 4 attempts at burning the program using different drivers, etc. a technical support rep finally told me the solution – said they’ve known about it all along, just haven’t documented it. Asus does not include a Windows 7 Pro “system” recover disc because burning it is “bad for the environment”. Guess Asus figures that if you give a politically correct answer no one will argue with you. However, they did include two (2) traditional Chinese recovery discs????????
2. The Asus documentation on how to “downgrade” to Windows XP Pro is incorrect. Different versions of the bios in the K52 than what the documentation shows. No one in technical support can give me an answer on what bios settings to change. The case has been “escalated” over a 5 day period with no call back yet. The last “engineer” went on vacation before she had a chance to call me and won’t be back in the office for a couple of weeks.
3. Asus technical support, on 3 different occasions, told me that they DO NOT recommend software changes, i.e., Windows 7 Pro to XP Pro, and they do not support anyone trying to “downgrade” the operating software. I asked why they advertize and sell the computer as being “downgradeable” if they don’t support it – no answer. One tech support person told me that “everyone knows we don’t support the Windows 7 Pro – XP Pro downgrade and we even have it on our web site.” I asked where and they could not find it.
I understand Asus is trying to enhance their position in the “mainstream” marketplace. If this is so, then they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them. How does the computer work? I don’t really know – I’m returning it and getting a different type.
